Backups

David Stewart Gillies Posted on 15/09/2015 by dsg25722/02/2017

They always say a backup is essential for anything you do on the computer / web
I have always made backups of various sorts for the following :-

  •  Outlook  (contacts , pst files)
  •  Windows
  •  Office Template (own created)
  • Documents
  • Masonic Minutes, letters , Forms
  • Websites ( with a number of sites  I use the web space to create a copy of the files on another site as well as locally and on NAS drive)
  • Photos  ( Lots  DVD best)
  • and many other things
  • When I build a computer for myself or someone else I always make a fresh backup of the system before all the other user files go on it  ( this allows me to restore back to the original state in the event of a disaster)

Now backup software is Good for compression but also harder to learn how to use especially to extract a single file or Directory

File Copy is Great for Exact copies of files and you can use Synchronization software to keep them in check You can do this with some storage sites eg. Microsoft, google, Drop box and many others

System backups  are more difficult, some files being used at present sometimes wont backup. Microsoft from windows 7 onwards provide software for this, which is actually quite good and you can access the files in it.

This is where google Comes in handy just search for what you want and there will be a step by step guide on how to do it

I have been fortunate  a number of times and have had all my work saved a number of times to avoid disaster

The most recent was a almost total loss of 5 years of work on the web site  including all posts and photos  everything to let you know I have a number of duplicate sites I use for testing new features before putting them on the live site  I run one as a sub site of another site  and one on a local host so everything is tested twice before it goes live except posts and photos

The restore of the site took over 4 hours

I once had a customer a Lecturer in ship Design who’s computer got corrupt in the care of where i worked. He brought it in to be upgraded but the HDD got totally corrupt and he blamed us saying the computer has never been hooked up to the internet or out of his care and he said the only copy of the lectures and plans for ship were on this computer so i set about recovering the files, 3 at a time using the trial version of a very expensive piece of recovery software. it took almost a hour to boot into dos and rebuild the partition table and navigate to the directory and copy the file to another drive. this took me a couple of weeks at night in my own time. But some of the files recovered were certainly downloaded from the internet and when i told him the bill which he did not want to pay as the computer was never out of his control or connected to the internet and blamed us for the problem but when i mentioned the files he said that must have been his friend when he gave him a loan of the computer And he paid Without a problem due to the file contents ( not illegal but distasteful)

Secure Passwords

David Stewart Gillies Posted on 10/01/2014 by dsg25710/01/2014

With all the talk everywhere about making your passwords secure I thought I would share my own method of secure password

Due to having registered on a great Number of sites/Forums using the same password on them all is Stupid and idiotic if you do a search on Google for dsg257 you will find a hell of a lot of forum posts etc as well as this website

But remembering multiple password is so difficult people write them on paper, in files, labels stuck to computer etc anything to remember them

So my solution is simple and comes I a three fold part
part 1 :- pick a name :- eg Samantha (daughter ) but mix it up :- S@manth@
part 2:- name of site :- eg Google mix it if you want eg. g00gle googl3
part 3:- place ,colour, pet :- eg glasgow eg Glasgow mix if you want G1asg0w

so the actual password would be for google :- S@manth@g00gleG1asg0w
facebook would be:- S@anth@facebookG1asg0w

This makes it easier to remember across multiple websites the middle part is always the site you are on the other two parts are easier to remember as they are a meaningful to you name and place
